I have been in a little verbal argument back and forth on facebook with a buddy of mine who has a blind hate for the heat and below is my response to his argument that the Heat are like the Yankees and that’s why everyone hates them.
I don’t like the Yankees but I also don’t sit here and not give the players the credit they deserve as great players. If you don’t recall Boston (which is the team you and I are a fan of) is also in the top 3 of salary year after year and essentially do the same thing that the yankees do, buying the best free agent on the market, year after year in the last 10 years. Yes Boston has a better farm system and builds up there players as well but you can’t sit here and tell me they don’t do something similar to what the Yankees do, i.e. Carl Crawford. First of all Baseball and football are completely different. In Baseball money wins most of the time because players play for the biggest contract that’s why NY, Boston, Philadelphia are perennially in the playoffs. In football 1 player doesn’t make that big of a difference and coaching wins, i.e. NE patriots and Belicheck draft better and coach their players better than anyone else = more championships. In basketball however with the salary cap it is almost impossible to do what the heat have done unless the 3 superstars take less money, which is what they did. They wanted to play in Miami, together, in order to win championships. Not play for the biggest paycheck like the Yankees. They got together to win, similar to how Boston assembled Garnett and Allen to team up with Pierce, how the Lakers brought in Pau Gasol and Shaq at another time, similar to how the Knicks are trying to do now with bringing in Carmelo and possibly Chris Paul next year. With your logic teams that should win are ones that didn’t “buy” their team (even though free agents, especially superstar ones, get max contract offers from various teams and they pick where they want to go) Orlando and Atlanta should be playing for the Eastern Conference Finals. I love small market teams as well, which is why I want OKC to be successful. But the argument I am trying to make is that regardless of our fans, which yes they are bandwagon fans i am not denying that, the team deserves credit where credit is due. They are playing out of their minds regardless of who is on the roster, i.e. Udonis, Mike Miller, Bosh (it was unexpected). And the only reason you have this blind hate (friend’s name) is because its not your team winning…
